Q: Mariel, why did you become an actress in A Faery Hunt?
A: When I first saw A Faery Hunt, what drew me in was how much fun the cast was having. They not only had fun with the children, but with each other. When I perform, itās always the best when you can truly have fun with your castmates and create friendships with them.
I have been with A Faery Hunt for over a year now and have made some great friends in the process. Our natural rapport helps us to be more in-sync with each other when we are performing activities for kids, and makes it a more pleasurable experience for the audience. Itās really nice being in an almost-all-female ensemble who support each other and always build each other up. š¶š§š§š
Q: Whatās one of your fondest memories in creating activities for kids at A Faery Hunt?
A: After a recent show, a girl came up to me and gave me the bracelet she was wearing! I was so honored.
Q: What makes A Faery Hunt different from other theater companies youāve worked with?
A: Engaging the adults as well as the children is not hard with the wonderfully written scripts we have. Debbie (founder/writer of A Faery Hunt) did a great job of including jokes the kids will get, and some that are just for the parents. I also like to call the adults the ābig kidsā during shows, and they get a kick out of it.
Q: How does performing with A Faery Hunt help you in the entertainment industry?
A: Being a part of A Faery Hunt has definitely helped with my improv skills and performing in general. Having an active audience three feet away from you is much different than being in a theatre. When the kids speak up, we really listen to them and find ways to make their ideas or comments flow into the story we are telling. Being able to banter with the whole audience is so much fun, and a great skill to have as an actor when creating memorable activities for kids.
Q: How do you keep a script you perform over and over fresh?
A: To make each performance special, I personalize it for each child. If I see someone is shy and hanging back, I make sure to smile and wave at them so they know someone acknowledges them and is happy to see them. Or I might hold someoneās hand as we are walking through the forest. At the end, when I can meet everyone individually, I give them a compliment or ask them questions to engage them further, and to make sure they have a memorable experience.
Q: How do you prepare for A Faery Hunt performance?
A: To prepare for each performance, I make sure to run my lines over and over again. Luckily, this company allows us to play multiple roles, so we can have fun being a mermaid one day and a gnome the next! It is so much fun to play these different parts, but also tricky if we have played two different characters in the same script!
I need to make sure I know exactly which lines are mine for that week, so I donāt steal anyone elseās. But I also know that if I forget what to say, someone else will jump in and say it for me, since we are familiar with each otherās lines. I also prepare what type of voice I will be speaking in that week (a faery voice is different than a pirate!), and practice any physical movements, like a stick fight or a dance.
